everything you need to know about
looking after your hair extensions if you swim regularly or use a hot tub
regular swimming & hot tubs
Hair Extensions are a commitment and require additional time dedicated to aftercare. This will ensure your natural hair also remains in healthy condition during wear.
For our clients that regularly swim or use a hot tub these activities are still possible if you wear hair extensions.
Following our recommended guidelines will ensure problem free wear and help maintain the lifespan of your hair extensions and protect & preserve your natural hair.
Your hair will be exposed to chemicals which will have an adverse effect on the hair, moisture on the attachments , heat & shampooing, drying & styling more regularly.
All can dry out the hair and break down bonds.
It is important to understand the pitfalls in order to protect & prevent them from occurring.
chemicals
Firstly it is important to understand the main chemical additives which are added to the water. Primarily these will be Chlorine or Bromine (alongside other chemicals) which are designed to purify the water & kill bacteria.
It is added to water which also contains natural minerals.
It is also very important to know the water hardness / softness of the area you live & the effect this will have on your hair combined with chemical additives. (see Holiday Aftercare)
FACTS:
*Oxidiation All elements that react with oxygen form compounds called 'Oxides"
Put simply is 'addition of oxygen'
matting
One of the main causes of matting is hair being tied up when wet or sleeping with wet / damp hair.
The most common area of matting for clients who use a Hot Tub regularly is the bottom section where the hair is tied up and left to dry naturally.
Even if the hair is not submerged into the water the steam has the same effect.
It is so important that the hair is brushed before putting up and then taken out and washed & dried ASAP.
for clients in a hard water region this may also have an adverse impact on the hair if the correct products are not used.
Hard water has a high pH value causing the cuticle to raise, this can result in the outer layer being 'roughened" which can also be a contributing factor to matting.
(Please see 'Holiday Aftercare" for further info on Hard Water effects.
See our Aftercare Guide for the full shampooing, conditioning, drying & brushing guidelines based on the method you are wearing.

Your attachments are also at higher risk of breakdown due to regular chemical exposure and moisture.
